Importance of Car Brakes
Car brakes are the most important and reliable tool for a driver and it is an essential element of any automobile. An automobile cannot be said completed with the exclusion of car brakes. Basically brakes are used to reduce the speed of a running body, it is a simple pad mostly pressed through legs but in some situations it comes in hands as in special persons' cases or also in speedy cars and racing activities, brakes paddles are provided in hands for better efficiency.
Working of Car brake
The most interesting thing about the car brake is, a small paddle can stop a huge vehicle with a slight push of brake pad and how does it happened is still a mystery for most of the people, but nowadays most people understand the process. When you press the brake pedal with the help of your foot, car transmits the force from your foot to its brakes through a fluid, but the actual brakes needs a much greater force than you could apply with your leg, your car must also multiply the force of your foot. It is technical process in which, the brakes transmit the force to the tires, and tires transmit the force to the road using and the law of friction applies.
Types of Brake:
There are two different types of brake system used to stop vehicles: drum brakes and disk brakes.
Drum Brake
Drum brake system slow down a car by fiction, by pressing brake shoes against a drum. A drum brake mechanism is consist of different components(Drum, Brake lining, Return spring, Piston, Wheel cylinder, Brake shoe, Brake pads, Wheel hub, Stud,) with the help of all these components a vehicle can be stopped by just putting little pressure on brake pedal.
Disk Brake
Another system is a disk brake system which is a lot simpler than the previous one and more effective as well, it is a round, flat, piece of metal, pressed against the wheel to slow or stop the car and the main component of this system are(Brake line, Splash shield, Disk brake). These two systems are the primary and mostly used.
Anti-Lock Brakes(ABS)
There are some other systems as well, those are developed recently and installed in almost all newly assembled cars. This system is Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), the system consists of an electronic control unit, a hydraulic actuator (stimulator), and wheel speed sensors at each wheel. If the control unit detects a problem in system, it will kindle an ABS warning light on the dash to let you know that there is a problem.
Parking or Hand Brake
There is also a fourth type of brake that is known as parking brake or hand brake, this is also most important and frequently used part of a vehicle. There are several types of brake systems used today. Your car can use any or a combination of these to stop your car more efficiently.

1998 Toyota Corolla - brake light on the is displayed sometimes even hand brake is not on?
For past few days, brake light sign (on dash board) gets displayed for a while even when hand brake or paddle brake is not pressed. It disapprears for some time and again shows up. Could this be some electrical connection to brake light issue or could it have to do with brake wearing out. Appreciate your help.
that light will be on for a total of 4 different reasons.
1. e brake is still on, even partially will keep it on with the brakes free enough for you not to feel a drag.
2. brake fluid level is low, a sensor in the master cylinder will turn that light on.
3. a pressure differential will set of a light because of a partial systemic failure.
4. on some cars like a mercedeze, a sensor is incorporated into the brake pad to turn that light on when the pad is due fir replacement or at least close to that point.
all in all if that light is on, get the brakes checked out before you are nothing more than a statistic.
