Can Broadband Disconnections be caused by an old modem?

I keep getting disconnected from my Broadband service with ukonline when I am on the Internet. Sometimes I am cut off just a couple of seconds after logging on, sometimes it takes longer. Nonetheless, it always happens eventually, and it can happen up to about 50 times per day. It is worse at what seems to be peak times for Internet use, like Sunday afternoons. My provider, ukonline, has been of little help. They have told me not to use an extension lead (I don't), to check the "test socket" in the master phone point (I have), to change my broadband filters (I have), but their most recent excuse is that my modem is too old. My modem is a BT Voyager 105 and it is 2 years old.
Is this explanation plausible? Has anybody else had hassles with ukonline? Does anybody have any ideas about what the real problem might be, and the solution. Thanks

A friend of mine had exatly the same problem with a two year old Voyager 105. I replaced it with an adsl wireless router and his problem has gone away. However, before you go down this route insist that your ISP checks your line connection.
